Workers quitting their jobs at fastest rate since 2001

Workers quitting their jobs at fastest rate since 2001Workers quitting their jobs at fastest rate since 2001Right now, many of us are sitting at our desks for our current job quietly hunting for a new job. According to the Labor Department, the number of people quitting their jobs is the highest it has been since 2001. On Tuesday, the government reported that the number of people who left their jobs willingly in May rose up to 2.4%, increasing by 212,000 to a total of 3.3 million. The rate of workers leaving jobs is the highest in 17 yearsThe government report found that the schrift of employees who are choosing to leave for greener pastures worked in healthcare, social assistance, finance, insurance, transportation, utilities, and warehousing industries. Why are so many people quitting? You can be choosy about your job when you know that the odds of getting a better one are in your favor. According to the Labor Department, the odds are in job seekers favor, because there are more open ings than people needing to fill those vacancies. Businesses are advertising 6.64 million available jobs in May, while there are only 6.1 million unemployed people.Overall, ahigh quit rate is the sign of a strong American economy, because it signals that you feel confident that you could find a more high-paying job if you left your job today. When youre not sure what you want out of your career

When youre not sure what you want out of yur careerWhen youre not sure what you want out of your careerOver the course of 31 stops in 11 different cities for theBossed Up BookTour, I ran into a question from the audience that came up time and time againwhat do I do if I dont know what I want to do?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis is a major reason why women choose to join me atBossed Up Bootcamp, our weekend for women navigating career transition. While I write and speak a lot abouthowto achieve your goals in a strategic and sustainable way, half the battle is figuring outwhatyoure striving towardsWhat if you dont know what your goals are? What if youre feeling lost, stuck, andunclear about your career?Embrace the DiscomfortIts easy to ignore the gaping hole in your heart when yourpassionand purpose feel unfulfilled. That existential dread is easily blanketed over with drinki ng, sex, food, drugs, constant travel, or any of your preferred forms of self-soothing.Dont distract yourself from the career crisis at hand dive into it.Be honest with yourself about whats not working. What do you feel is lacking? Whose careers make you feel a pang of jealousy? What are you longing for? Write it out if you need to get clear on what feels amiss. This is not an easy or glamorous process. It can bring up feelings of inadequacy, shame, and anxiety, especially if you dont knowhowto solve the problem yet. Bring self-compassion to this exploration. As I say in theBossed Up Manifesto, forgive yourself now for the less-than-perfect decisions youll make.Because before you can figure outhowto get there, you have to get clear onwhatyoure gettin after. I write about this concept inthe Bossed Up Bookin even greater detail often as we hone our analytical, critical-thinking skills through formal education, we accidentally lose our imagination along the way. We stop focusing on what wed love and start limiting our view to what seems practical, possible, and reasonable. That can easily lead you to a hollow sense of success. You can build a career thats great for someone, but not great foryou.Make it PlayfulIf you know what youdontwant, but still find it difficult to imagine what youdowant for your career, experiment with lower stakes. Career planning can easily become a very stuffy and formal conversation and that kills your creativity Dont take yourself so seriously.Turn your exploration into a playful imagination game by asking your best friend to daydream with youWhat would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow? If you knew the world would end in 10 years? If you were writing a postcard from yourself 5 years into the future to your present self?Play with it. Swirl your vision around in the your wine glass with pals. Bounce the idea around in between deep breathes on a jog together. Try your best to suspend the TO DO list making part of your brain that wants to dive into the doing and just play with dreaming.Devote Time to ExplorationHeres the hardest part about living in the discomfort of career transition this stuff doesnt go away overnight. It takes time to shift the course of your entire career. It takes dedication, consistency, and faith in your vision to make it a reality.ManyBossed Up Bootcampalums leave our powerful weekend together with a newfound sense of direction and confidence, but that ish doesnt manifest overnight Thats why its so important for me to keep in touch with those alums for years to come, so I can hear how things are going for them and share their incredible career transformation stories (likethis one from Maggieorthis one from Kerriann) to inspire even moreMake sure youre carving out dedicated time monthly, weekly, and daily to devote to exploring whats next for you. Whether you find written reflection or talking it out with friends more productive for you, make sure youre consistently creating the space yo u need to explore.Hang with People Who Inspire YouFinally, when youre devoting time to explore your deepest-held desires and career ambitions, make sure youre sharing your experience with the kind of people who are worthy of it.Sharing your hopes and dreams is a vulnerable act and not everyones worthy of your vulnerability. Brene Brown actually listed out six different kinds of people who arent worthy of your vulnerability when talking with Oprah on Super soulmusik SundaySurround yourself with the people who build you up, who contribute to your creative brainstorm, who can inspire you to dream bigger, to go for it, and to throw your hat into the ring. And if you find yourself searching for that kind of a courage community and coming up short, know thatthe Bossed Up Courage Community on Facebookis here for you.Join me LIVE to do this togetherNavigating uncertainty, feelingstuck, and not knowing whats next for your life and career is not an easy place to be. Interview Tips for the Interviewer

Interview Tips for the InterviewerInterview Tips for the InterviewerInterview Tips for the InterviewerBy Lynda M. Bassett, Contributing WriterSo youve had a crazy day, with a million deadlines and a thousand small crises. Now you have to interview candidates for a marketing assistant position. If you dont have a human resources department to guide you along, here are some tips for how to prepare for and conduct a job interview from the other side of the desk.Nine Tips for InterviewersRemember that during the interview process, candidates are deciding whether they want to work for you just as much as you are trying to decide whether to hire them. You have only about an hour to make a good impression on the candidate. Follow ansicht steps1. Write down a list of questions that directly relate to the jobs responsibilities. If you dont have a job description, list the key responsibilities of the position, and then draw up a list of questions that relate to those responsibilities, says Jo hn Dooney, manager of strategic resource for the Society for Human Resources Management, a nonprofit association for human resources professionals.2. Ask behavioural questions, as in tell me about a time when you Ask for specific examples of past performance and behaviour, says Dooney. Previous successes are a good indicator of future performance.3. Review the candidates resume before the interview. This may seem obvious, but by preparing your interview questions and reviewing the resume, you are showing the candidate you have taken the time to ensure a productive interview.4. Outline the interview structure for the candidate. First, give a brief description of the company, and then outline the job duties. Finally, ask the applicant questions. After that, the candidate will have the opportunity to ask you questions. This sets up the parameters of the interview, keeps you both focused, and gives the candidate an idea of what to expect.5. Dont talk too much during the interview proces s. Dooney suggests hiring managers should talk only about 30 percent of the time. Allow candidates time to describe their skills and qualifications during the interview. Make sure youve covered all your questions and you havent missed anything, Dooney adds.6. Extend professional courtesies, says Dooney. Offer candidates a glass of water, and ask if they had difficulty finding the place. Be on time. Consider giving them a tour of the office. Give them an opportunity to speak with other team members or prospective coworkers, if appropriate.7. Watch nonverbal signals. Just as you are looking for eye contact and appropriate dress, the candidate is looking for those unspoken signals from you. Be sure your tone of voice is appropriate and professional. Clearly articulate the jobs duties and the companys mission. Dress as you normally would, and pay attention to manners. You are a representative of your company and department, so make sure your actions reflect this.8. While being polite an d professional, dont get too chummy. Keep all your questions job-related, says Dooney. If you spend the interview chatting, you may make a hiring decision because you liked the candidate versus whether the rolle is truly qualified for the job, he explains.9. Whether its by email or phone, follow up to let candidates know whether they got the job. This is one more way of extending a professional courtesy and gives the interview process closure. The Answer Youve Been WaitingForThe hiring process is hardly a walk in the park, and the job interview may very well be the trickiest step to get through. Understand Mutual Funds Accounting

Understand Mutual Funds AccountingUnderstand Mutual Funds AccountingMutual funds accounting is a critical matter for the financial system, given the increasing preference for mutual funds over direct holdings of securities such as stocks and schuldverschreibungs by the investing public. In particular, many, if not most, individual investors and retail clientshave the majority of their savings in employer-sponsored 401(k) plans, which typically offer a selection of mutual funds as the investment choices. The end product of mutual funds accounting is the accurate pricing of behauptung investment vehiclesand the correct assignment of investment income to holders thereof. unterstellung are thus, the major concerns for the chief financial officers (CFOs), controllers, and operations managers of mutual fund companies. Aspects of Mutual Funds Accounting Mutual fund accounting encompasses a variety of basic tasks, which may be performed by in-house staff or outsourced to other providers , such as custodian banks. These processes include Calculating the value of its investment portfolio on a daily basis- known as the net asset value (NAV).Anticipating and recording all income, such as dividends and interest.Recording accruing interest on bonds and other similar fixed income securities held in the investment portfolio.Properly amortizing the discount or premium on bond purchases. See the detaileuchtdiode explanation below.Recording all securities transactions, such as buys and sells of portfolio investments.Recording all realized capital gains, both short-term, and long-term, that result from securities transactions in the fund. Recording all inflows and outflows of funds due to purchases and redemptions of shares by investors.Maintaining records of the shares owned, and transactions made, by each shareholder in the fund.Tracking distributions of income and capital gains made to shareholders in the fund. In the best mutual funds accounting departments, these activiti es will be highly automated. However, some manual input, reviews, and adjustments may still be necessary. Net Asset Value Often abbreviated NAV, it is the aggregate value of a mutual funds investment portfolio divided by the number of its shares outstanding. The standard convention is to calculate NAV at the end of each trading day, based on the closing prices of all securities held therein. NAV also takes account of other activities listed above. Orders to purchase or sell shares of a mutual fund are executed at the closing NAV for the dayif they are received before the market close. If not, they are executed at the closing NAV for the next trading day. Bond Amortization When bonds are purchased at a discount or premium to their par value (that is, at a price lower or higher than the principal value that will be returned to the investor holding it when the bond matures), the difference between the purchase price and par value is recorded over time as an adjustment to the in terest income generated by the bond. The interest income recognized on a bond bought at a discount will be higher than the actual interest payments received. On a bond bought at a premium, it will be lower. The net effect is that any discount or premium on the purchase of a bond held to maturity will not be recognized as a capital gain or loss, but rather as an adjustment to interest income. Bond amortization is calculated on a daily basis by mutual funds. Case Study It is also a prime example of the sorts of engagementsthat are encountered in the field ofoperations consulting.A leading custodian bank offered mutual funds accounting services to mutual fund companies that already utilized it for the safekeeping of securities. Mutual funds accounting, in this context, primarily was involved with the daily computation of net asset value (NAV). The bank and its mutual fund clients were dissatisfied with the timeliness and accuracy of the NAV calculations being done. The bank engaged a team of consultants from a Big Four public accounting firm to study the processes within the mutual funds accounting department and to recommend changes to improve it. The consulting team from the Big Four firm spent several days observing how the mutual funds accounting department worked, by shadowing its employees as they performed their daily tasks. The consultants also interviewed employees and their managers, to get a better understanding of how they viewed their responsibilities, as well as to assess how knowledgeable they were about the mutual funds accounting field. Information Gathering The consulting team developed detailed flowcharts of processes in the department and discussed these with management, pointing out where work processes could be improved. The consultants also suggested improved automation. After getting approval from bank management, the consultants searched for software vendors that had packages appropriate to the banks situation. They then identifie d one that was willing to customize its existing system to meet the specifications needed for the banks unique situation and itsmix of clients. Process Planning Next, the consultants drew up these specifications in detail, and conducted extensive testing of the software as each module was completed, to be sure that calculations were done properly, and the system was durable and reliable. The user acceptance testing phase took a number of monthsand required extreme attention to detail. When the system was finally completed to specifications, the consulting team oversaw its installation and implementation, and led the training of employees, remaining on-site until the bank was comfortable that the new procedures were working well. In all, the project lasted almost precisely one year, with a team of three consultants on-site at the bank daily.

Study says sitting all day long at work is OK except for this one caveat

Study says sitting all day long at work is OK except for this one caveatStudy says sitting all day long at work is OK except for this one caveatWe all know that humans were never meant to sit all day long. The cavemen actually had it better for their bodies with their hunting and gathering and, you know, running for their lives from wooly mammoths. Sitting at work is giving us a myriad of health problems including obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol levels. However, a new study finds that sitting for the majority of the day may not be as bad as you thought as long as you work out a lot and your workouts include weight training. The study, published inBMC Medicine, was led by Carlos Celis-Morales from the University of Glasgow. Her team looked at data from nearly 400,000 middle-aged people in the UK by looking at tests of grip strength and fitness tests using an ergometer. When the study followed up five years later with the subjects after the initi al data collection it was found thatpeople with the weakest grips had a 31% higher risk of dying compared to those with stronger grips who basically sat for the saatkorn amount of time. The overall message is that it may not matter so much if you watch a lot of TV if you are strong, fit and physically active, Morales said. If you move and are more active, sitting will not have the same effect on your health as if you are inactive.Strengthen that gripEssentially it is OK if you sit for eight hours a day as long as some of your time outside of work is spent in active mode and particularly working on your grip strength. That grip is a real game changer as the people who were sedentary most of the day and had weak grips had a21% higher risk of developing heart disease and a 14% higher risk of getting cancer compared to people with higher grip strength. So as long as you are constantly moving outside of the office you will be fine

Examples of Powerful Qualifying Questions

Examples of Powerful Qualifying QuestionsExamples of Powerful Qualifying QuestionsThe sooner you can narrow down your lead list by eliminating all the non-prospects, the better. Once youve sorted out your leads and identified the true prospects, you can start moving said prospects alongthe sales process and hopefully into the close. Qualify Leads If you dont fully qualify your leads early on, youll be wasting a lot of time with people who will never buy from you. But on the other hand, if you ask too many touchy questions right away, theyll be reluctant to answer. So qualifying is always a balancing act between leaving enough time to build rapport without waiting so long that youve wasted everyones time. Many salespeople resolve this problem by asking a few very basic qualifying questions during the cold call to weed out the obviously unqualified folks and then finishing the qualification process during a second call or at the beginning of the sales presentation. Whatever timin g strategy you choose for qualifying, there are some crucial bits of information that can help you identify non-prospects early and send them on their way. behauptung particulardetails fall into two basic categories whether the person has a need for your product or service, and whether he has the means to buy from you at all. Qualifying Questions A prospect who has a need for what youre selling wont necessarily know it when you first reach out to him. Your qualifying questions can help him to realize that need at the same time youre digging up information for yourself, so this type of question can be especially powerful. Need qualifying questions include the following Have you made a purchase of this type before? How did it work out for you?Have you considered buying a product type? Why or why not?How do you see yourself using this product? How will it help you? What issues are you facing right now that this product can help you with?If there was one thing you could change about your life/business, what would it be?What will you gain from solving this issue? What are the risks involved in fixing this issue? What are the risks of NOT fixing it?How long has this issue been around? What has held you back from fixing it so far? If one of these questions triggers a strong response in your prospect, pursue it a long answer to a short question indicates its an important issue for him. But dont push if he refuses to answer a question. You can always return to it later once youve built a bit more trust with your prospect. The second category of qualifying questions helps you to determine whether a person can buy from you. An inability to buy might be related to a lack of money, or might occur because the person youre speaking with isnt the final decision maker or something else entirely. Some of these questions venture into pretty delicate areas, so ask them with caution unless youre sure youve built a strong rapport with the prospect. The following questions can h elp you uncover ability problems If you decide to buy, what will the purchasing process look like?Who will be involved in reviewing our proposal? How long will it take to get final approval? Will this purchase come out of your department budget?Who will generate the purchase order / complete the contract? Will there be a lender involved?
